Garden Revolution
Guide to native plantS
Save the WORLD, one plant at a time.
Search by color, bloom time, size, and more to find the perfect native plants for your garden.
Use your garden for good.
If you're here, YOU'VE HEARD ALL ABOUT WHY YOU SHOULD BE PLANTING NATIVE PLANTS.
And you know invasives = bad.
But then you head to your nearest Big Box garden center and see them selling Butterfly Bush?? Creeping Jenny?? English Ivy??
And if you're anything like me when I started down this path, you become overwhelmed and scared of doing something wrong, so you either don't plant anything or just grab something and hope for the best.
It should not be this hard to use your garden for good.
Less Screen Time, More Garden Time.
Good information about native plants is out there, but it often requires some foundational knowledge and a decent amount of time to sort through.
After spending literally hundreds of hours Googling scientific plant names, poring over academic websites, and cross-checking sources, I decided to compile all the most useful information in one easily searchable place.
And now, I'm making it available to you!
right plant, right place.
Plant the change you want to see in the world.
The only
tool of
its kind.
As I started replacing my yard with native plants, I kept looking for a tool that would allow me to search a database of tried-and-true plants that were native to my area, ecologically beneficial, safe for my dog, and a good match for my space.
But every choice I made required me to cross-check multiple sources, or search with one tool and then research with another.
THE TOOL I WAS LOOKING FOR DIDN'T EXIST, SO I MADE IT.
Several years later, this guide has all the details a gardener needs about over 100 plants native to the Eastern half of the U.S.
Now that my native garden is thriving and buzzing with life, I'm here to help other people experience the same magic.

Hi, I'm Kat!
I'm an ecological landscape designer rooted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I've studied native plants and ecological gardening since 2020, and in 2024 I became a certified Permaculture Designer.
I'm obsessed with the power of plants to heal people and the planet. I believe every person deserves access to beautiful natural spaces, and I think those spaces can be created right in our own backyards.

This is the actual tool I use when I'm working on a new landscape design.
It's built in Notion, a user-friendly, web-based tool that allows you to view the database of plants in whatever way works for your brain.
Advanced filters and sorting tools allow you to search by bloom time, color, sun and water requirements, height, habit, ecological function, and more.
Want your garden to nourish your body as well as your soul? Filter by plants that are edible or medicinal.
Buy once, use 4ever. <3 The Guide currently includes over 100 native plants. When more species are added, you'll automatically see them, no updates or purchases required.
The Guide to Native Plants is hundreds of hours and several years in the making. (And counting! More plants are added all the time.)
There's no other tool quite like it.
And making ecologically sound choices should be easy and accessible.
So it's priced at only:
$19

Do I live in the right place for these plants?
Because I am located in Western Pennsylvania, I focused on including plants in this database that are native to Appalachia, the Northeast, and the Midwest.
Whenever possible, I opted for species with broader native ranges. You’ll find county-level BONAP maps included with every plant species to help you determine if a plant is a good fit for your area.
Are these plants safe for my dog/cat/horse?
As the biological mother of a pit bull mix who loves to explore mouth-first, I’ve taken special care to research and note whether every single plant in this database is toxic to dogs, cats, or horses. You can even filter by safe plants for your pet! <3
Of course, levels of toxicity vary greatly - some plants may cause mild stomach upset and some plants can be fatal if ingested. Extreme cases are noted.
I'm in Zone XX. Will this work for me?
By their vary nature, native plants have evolved to not only survive, but thrive in certain areas. Instead of using Zones, take a look at the native range map included for each species to see if a plant will work for you!
Most plants in this database are native to Appalachia, the Northeast, and/or the Midwest. Whenever possible, I opted for species with broader native ranges.
Do I have to know how to use Notion?
If you’re new to Notion, welcome! I love this tool because it’s user-friendly, allows me to update the database regularly, prettier than a spreadsheet, and you don’t have to create an account to use it.
You can open the link in your browser (on your desktop, tablet, or phone), and there’s a “How to” guide and video at the top of the page to help you navigate.
Is this printable?
This resource is made to be accessed digitally. When you buy, you'll get a secret link that you can bookmark and come back to whenever you want. Because it's digital, that means you'll also automatically get access to every single update!
That said, if you check the “Add to My Garden” box, you could totally print a page that includes all the plants you'd like in your garden to bring shopping with you or easily reference.
I don't have a lot of space. Will this still be helpful to me?
YES! Every single native plant provides benefits to our ecosystem. No matter what kind of space you have, whether it's a few pots on a balcony or several acres, you can make a real difference.
Some native plants have super deep roots or require a lot of space, but many can thrive in containers, grow up a trellis, or stay put in a small garden plot. Notes about each plant's growing habits are included to help you find the perfect fit for your space.
The revolution will be beautiful.
